Thank You for Numerous Donations to our Synagogue!

So many of you heard the call for donations to Congregation Ohr Shalom recently. Whether it be in honor of loved ones, in memory of relatives or special people who improved your lives in some way, the list was long and touching. Thank you for showing your love and support to the synagogue with this special mitzvah.

Chile Contributions Encouraged

Who could have imagined that not one but two devestating earthquakes would occur within such a short space of time!

After the disaster in Haiti, our congregation set up a task force specifically to determine how we, as a community, can aid those who suffer disasters worldwide. Gayle Gerson is heading this task force and, along with the Board, is asking everyone to donate what they can to ease the suffering in Chile.

If you are planning to donate, we urge you to send your check through Congregation Ohr Shalom so that we, as a community, can fulfill our commitment to tikkun olam (healing the world). The plan is for Congregation Ohr Shalom to send a check to the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) which has already organized to help in Chile through the Jewish communities located in Santiago and Concepcion and other areas affected by the earthquake. We anticipate sending our first check to the JDC within the next few days and then on a regular basis as checks arrive. JDC was instrumental in sending aid to Haiti as well.

Press Release to the Media

GRAND JUNCTION’S JEWISH COMMUNITY MOBILIZES IN SUPPORT OF ISRAEL.

Congregation Ohr Shalom, Grand Junction’s Reform Jewish synagogue started emails and phone trees on Wednesday, July19 to alert their congregation of a special Sabbath service/meeting to discuss the current situation in Israel.  This last Friday night the synagogue was packed, with over half the congregation in attendance.  After a brief Shabbat service, Joe Breman took the bimah (Hebrew for podium or stage) to discuss the seriousness of the situation between Israel and Lebanon.

Joe Breman, Grand Junction’s foremost authority on Israel told the congregation about his daily phone calls to friends and colleagues in Haifa.  Joe has been to Israel over 90 times.  He is in constant contact with Jewish agencies and the situation is not good. Long time local resident, Henry Wheeler also addressed the group to provide some history of Israel’s situation and explained the topography of Israel.

The Jewish community wanted to know what they could do to help.  An immediate letter writing campaign, to thank our Government for their support of Israel, is being started along with a collection of monetary donations.
