"Mazon" is Judaism's response to those suffering from hunger not only locally but throughout the world.
The basis of this call to action comes from the following:
"And when you reap the harvest of your land you shall not reap all the way to the edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest: you shall leave them for the poor and for the stranger. I the Eternal am your G-d."
Leviticus 23:22
During our annual community Passover seder, we collect monies to send to Mazon.
Yellow Candles for Holocaust Awareness - Past and Present
In 2006,2007, and again in 2008, we sent out yellow candles to light on May 1, (Yom Hashoah). We gave to the Genocide Awareness project of the National Holocaust Museum in 2010. (www.ushmm.org/genocide/taskforce).
We are asking for donations in multiples of $18 or Chai. The money this year will be sent to help the refugees in Darfur with the 'solar cookit' project. and here in Grand Junction for homelessness.
The yellow candles has become an annual event in our congregants' homes. Many of our families have put this commemoration as an important day on their calendar.
